The story

A motor-mouthed outsider with no memory of his past is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.

What it’s like

Gritty, sun-bleached wasteland under a flat orange sky: dust hangs in the air, cars are rusted scrap welded into spiked battle machines, and the palette runs ochre, bruise purple and the occasional neon-pink splash of a demented clown's paint. The camera stays close and kinetic during the car chases, with wide desert shots to show how far there is to go, and the score leans on loud guitar and synth pulse that drops out for quieter moments between the people. It feels like a rowdy, irreverent road movie crossed with a pulpy video game: fun, messy, and playful in its nastiness. Pacing moves in bursts, with long stretches of banter and bickering between two mismatched travellers followed by sudden vehicular mayhem. Violence is frequent and graphic, with gore, dismemberment and explosions played for dark laughs, though it is cartoonish rather than bleak. The emotional core is an unlikely partnership slowly turning into loyalty, with the lead's search for his own identity giving the adventure its heart. Best for viewers who want loud, funny, action-heavy escapism and don't mind a lot of blood, not for anyone seeking something gentle or calm.
