The story

A college campus is plagued by a vicious serial killer murdering students in ways that correspond to various urban legends.

What it’s like

Cold blue-grey night exteriors and warm amber dorm interiors give Urban Legend its look: a 1998 studio slasher shot with glossy, saturated polish, with wide campus lawns, icy highway shoulders and dim, cramped rooms where the killer's shadow lingers in the corners. The camera moves with brisk, conventional energy, quick push-ins and tracking shots through corridors and parking lots, while the score leans on stabs of strings and pulsing synth beneath whispered rumours and sudden jump-cut shocks. Its vibe is glossy, mischievous suspense, the kind of late-night teen-horror chill that suits a Halloween rewatch or a group watch with the lights off. Pacing is brisk and escalating, with the dread built around a series of set-piece deaths and the satisfaction of a reveal, and the young cast trade suspicion and banter as friends turn on each other. Violence is present and occasionally graphic, with murders shown on screen and some blood, but it stays on the stylised side of slasher convention rather than prolonged gore; there is brief nudity and some sexual innuendo. It is for viewers who enjoy whodunit twists, campus-set teen thrillers and the playful menace of 90s horror.
