The story

The epic story of Utawarerumono comes to an end in Mask of Truth, as the fate of the world will be determined by warring nations. The game features exciting SRPG battles, a colorful cast of new/familiar faces that will determine the fate of their world, a rousing original soundtrack, and the dramatic conclusion to the journey of Haku. After the events of Mask of Deception, Haku is destined to rally the nation of Ennakamuy to fight against the evil forces that now control the Yamato throne.

What it’s like

Painted anime backdrops and bright, saturated character portraits sit over an ink-and-watercolour sense of the world: rolling green hills, misty river valleys, sunlit wooden villages and castle walls that look carved out of pale stone. Between story scenes the screen fills with static dialogue frames, so the rhythm is patient, with long stretches of text and talk punctuated by grid-based tactical maps where units glide across terrain in bright, readable colours. The score is orchestral and rousing, swelling for battles and softening into wistful strings and flute for quieter, reflective moments. Violence is present throughout as war: swordplay, arrows and mass battles, with some stylised bloodshed and deaths that land with real weight, though nothing is graphically gory. Sexual content is limited to fan-service-style suggestiveness and light romance. The emotional register is earnest and hopeful, with melancholy undercurrents about loss and duty, and the arc follows a gentle, reluctant young leader gradually stepping up to lead a people through conflict. It suits players who enjoy long-form fantasy storytelling, patient strategy, and the comfort of a sincere, sweeping adventure.
