The story
The Utopia Experiments is a legendary graphic novel shrouded in mystery. When a group of strangers find themselves in possession of an original manuscript, their lives suddenly and brutally implode.
What it’s like
Saturated, hyper-colourful interiors, bright primary-coloured graphics and a glossy digital finish that clash with the grubby, sweat-streaked faces of the people in them. Frequent handheld close-ups, jittery zooms and abrupt jump cuts give it a restless, paranoid energy, while the rich, jagged score (pulsing synth stings and tense strings) drops suddenly into silence before each shock. The mood is cynical, sour and darkly comic, with a creeping conspiracy dread and a sense that something is always being hidden in plain sight. Violence is frequent and sometimes brutal, with sudden, graphic moments of cruelty and bloody, unflinching deaths, and there is strong bad language and disturbing sexual and body-horror material. It does not suit anyone wanting gentle viewing. Best for viewers who enjoy unnerving, cynical thrillers with sharp satire, a late-night binge, and a taste for the macabre.
