The story

Valheim is an open-world survival and exploration game set in a procedurally generated world inspired by Norse mythology. Playing alone or with up to nine other players, you explore dangerous biomes, gather resources, craft weapons and armour, build Viking settlements and longships, and battle powerful creatures and bosses in order to prove yourself worthy of Odin. Progression is tied to exploration and defeating the Forsaken, with each biome introducing new enemies, resources, crafting possibilities and challenges. From the peaceful Meadows to the frozen Deep North, players can build, farm, sail, fight and explore the tenth world at their own pace.

What it’s like

Wind through tall grass and the clatter of a hammer on a half-built longhouse: Valheim looks like a hand-painted Nordic storybook that has been left out in the weather. Its palette moves with the biomes, from sunlit meadows of soft green and gold to the blue-grey hush of snowfields and the sickly amber of swamps, while the day-night cycle lays long shadows across timber and stone. The camera stays close behind a low-poly-leaning but warmly lit character, and the world is wide enough to feel empty in the best way. Sound does much of the work: ambient birdsong and rain on the roof, a sparse, folk-tinged score that swells only for boss fights, and the creak of a longship on water. The vibe is cozy and quietly tense, with long stretches of peaceful building and foraging broken by sudden dread when night falls. Violence is stylised and frequent but not gory; creatures are fought with clubs, bows and axes, and death costs you your gear rather than dwelling on suffering. It suits a slow weekend, a co-op session with friends, or the hours spent planning a farm and a home. It is for players who love crafting, tinkering and the slow satisfaction of making a place their own.
