The story

It’s the first day of the 1963 school year at Voltaire High! And for the first time, girls and boys will mingle. This first year of coeducation is full of surprises, both for teachers and students.

What it’s like

Warm, sunlit 1960s school corridors, with chalk dust, wool blazers, and bicycles parked outside, set the look of this French period comedy-drama. The mood is light and bustling, with the energy of a school year where boys and girls suddenly share the same classrooms. Much of the humour comes from awkward glances, nervous crushes, and teachers caught off guard by change, and the register stays warm and slightly wry while tipping into real feeling when characters push against old rules. Romance runs through the staff room as much as the playground, and the pacing is brisk and episodic, with an ensemble rhythm rather than long quiet stretches. Intensity is low: no violence or gore, and the tensions are social and emotional rather than frightening, though questions of identity and prejudice surface in the background. It suits a cosy evening in, a comfort rewatch, or a lazy weekend, for viewers who enjoy period settings, ensemble school stories, and gentle nostalgia for the early sixties.
