The story

Modern-day Texas Ranger, Cordell Walker's independent crime-solving methods have their roots in the rugged traditions of the Old West. Walker's closest friend is former Ranger, C.D. Parker, who retired after a knee injury, and now owns "C.D.'s," a Country/Western saloon/restaurant. Rookie Ranger, James "Jimmy" Trivette is an ex-football player who bases his crime-solving methods on reason and uses computers and cellular phones. Alex Cahill is the Assistant DA who shares a mutual attraction with Walker, but often disagrees with his unorthodox approach to law enforcement.

What it’s like

Warm, sun-bleached Texas in the early nineties: wide establishing shots of open highways and flat horizons under hard midday light, then the cooler interiors of a saloon with wood-panelled walls, neon beer signs, and low amber lamps. The look is standard broadcast-TV of its era, with steady medium shots, plenty of two-shots over coffee or pool tables, and a bright, slightly soft digital-era finish rather than grain. Country and western guitar drifts through the scenes, and the score leans on bright synth-and-strings cues that rise at each confrontation. The vibe is steady, old-fashioned comfort with a hint of dusty grit: unhurried between cases, with a rhythm of brief tensions followed by long easy scenes of friends talking, eating and bantering. Its people are loyal and plainspoken, and the central arc is a stoic lawman slowly warming to a wary romance and to a younger partner who trusts reason over rough justice. Violence is regular but stylised: punch-ups, shootouts and vehicle chases, mostly bloodless and quickly resolved, with occasional threats and dark crimes handled at a distance. It suits Sunday afternoons, background viewing while cooking, or an easy rewatch for fans of classic action-drama who like their heroes honest and their lunches southern.
