The story
Pro Evolution Soccer 2, known as World Soccer: Winning Eleven 6 in Japan, is the second instalment of Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer football video game series. The Japanese version was succeeded by the updated World Soccer: Winning Eleven 6 Final Evolution. It was the last game of the series released in Europe for PlayStation and the only game released for the Nintendo Gamecube.
What it’s like
Bright, sun-washed stadiums with crisp daylight shading and a broadcast-style camera trailing behind the player, the grass a flat, slightly shimmering green under PlayStation 2 polygons. Night matches glow under floodlights, and the players, still a little blocky, move with a readable, mechanical weight that rewards patience. The soundscape is a steady murmur of crowd noise, whistles and match commentary that swells at a shot on goal and drops into hush during a set-piece. It has the warm, slightly dated charm of an early-2000s sports game: low-stakes, sincere, and built for evenings of friendly rivalry. Matches run in familiar rhythms, with long build-ups, scrappy tackles and the tension of a penalty shootout settling a tournament. Fouls and red cards are the only confrontations, so the intensity stays gentle, with no gore or cruelty and only the mild frustration of a missed chance. It suits a rainy Sunday on the sofa, a competitive session with a friend, or a lazy solo run through a cup. It is for people who love the feel of football itself, the tactical back-and-forth and the small thrill of a perfectly threaded pass, more than any glossy modern spectacle.
