The story

As New York City is invaded by alien creatures who hunt by sound, a woman named Sam fights to survive with her cat.

What it’s like

Washed-out urban daylight and near-silent streets, with the city rendered in grey concrete, dust and smeared headlight glow. Director Michael Sarnoski frames much of the film in still, patient shots that hold on faces and empty intersections, and the sound design is the real texture here: long stretches of muffled, underwater quiet broken by a sudden crack or a distant shriek that makes the whole room flinch. Its vibe is tense, melancholy and intimate, a slow-burn survival story that suits a late evening alone with the lights off and the volume low. The pacing is deliberate, building dread through restraint rather than constant action, and its emotional core is a terminally ill woman and a reluctant companion slowly finding tenderness amid catastrophe. Intensity is real but brief: sudden, sharp violence and creature attacks land hard, with some blood, and the fear is more jolting than gory, with no sexual content. It is for viewers who want horror that lingers in mood and sound, and who can handle bursts of sharp, startling brutality within an otherwise quiet, humane story.
