The story
Abobo's Big Adventure is a freeware parody Flash game. Inspired by various video games released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the game features Abobo, a boss character from the Double Dragon franchise, traveling through the worlds of several different games to save his son. Developed by I-Mockery founder Roger Barr, Abobo's Big Adventure was released in January 2012 to positive critical reception.
What it’s like
Chunky NES-style pixel sprites in bright, flat palettes, with each stage borrowing the look of a different 8-bit game, so the scenery shifts from scrolling brawler streets to swimming sections and boss arenas with a deliberately clumsy, retro-browser charm. The sound is chiptune-flavoured and jaunty, the kind of cheerful loop you half-hear while doing something else. The vibe is goofy, self-aware and light, best suited to a lazy afternoon, a short evening session, or a nostalgic gamer's giggle-fest. Pacing is quick and episodic: short levels, frequent boss fights, and plenty of hidden jokes and nods to other games. The tone is irreverent rather than tense, with the hero's ridiculous earnestness doing most of the comedy. Violence is constant but cartoonish, all punches, kicks and exaggerated knockouts, with some comic gore that reads as slapstick rather than horror. Fear is absent and cruelty is played for laughs. It suits players who enjoy old-school beat 'em ups, parody, and in-jokes about gaming history, and who don't mind a slapstick brawl with a bit of cartoon bloodshed.
