The story

7000 years ago, Ayodhya's Prince Raghava and Prince Sesh along with the Mighty Vanar Warriors travels to the island of Lanka with an aim to rescue Raghava's wife Janaki, who has been abducted by Lankesh, the king of Lanka.

What it’s like

Glossy digital spectacle in saffron, gold and deep indigo, with the sheen of CGI laid over live-action sets. The camera favours sweeping crane moves and wide establishing shots of sprawling kingdoms, forests and an ocean crossing, and the mythic frame lends the images a storybook scale. The score swells with brass and percussion through big set-piece sequences, and the sound design leans on whooshing arrows, roaring creatures and crowd noise. A mythological epic told in a single long, sweeping arc: a band of warrior princes and their allies cross into an ornate, shadowy island to bring back a kidnapped wife. Battles are frequent and bombastic, with fantasy combat, monstrous enemies and some bloodshed, though the violence stays stylised and mostly bloodless rather than grim. The register is earnest and devotional, more grand than intimate, with heroism and loyalty at its centre. Best suited to viewers who enjoy big-screen mythic adventure, Ramayana retellings and spectacle-first action on a weekend afternoon, rather than anyone seeking quiet, realistic drama or gentle, low-stakes viewing.
