The story
The Game Boy Color version of Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare received a relatively faithful adaptation of the home console game. The cartridge-based format necessitated the removal of the full-motion video cutscenes present in other versions, and many gameplay areas had to be reduced in size, with some eliminated entirely. However, the basic pre-rendered environments and the 3D characters imposed on top of them remain.
What it’s like
Pre-rendered backdrops on a small handheld screen give this Game Boy Color take on the survival horror classic a murky, low-resolution gloom: dim greenish-grey rooms, flickering torchlight and fixed camera angles that make every corridor feel like a trap. Its look is blocky and compressed, with 3D characters pasted onto static scenery, and the sound is sparse, mostly footsteps, creaks and the occasional sting, so silence does much of the unsettling work. Pacing is slow and deliberate, built around backtracking, careful item management and puzzles that ask for patience rather than reflexes. The mood is isolated and uneasy, a lonely, cold dread that never quite tips into spectacle. Violence and death are present and abrupt but rendered in small, undetailed sprites, so the horror comes from atmosphere and tension rather than gore. Best suited to a late-night session alone with the handheld, or to players who enjoy puzzle-heavy survival horror and don't need cinematic polish.
