The story
Atom RPG is a post-apocalyptic indie game, inspired by classic CRPGs: Fallout, Wasteland, System Shock, Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate and many others. In 1986 both the Soviet Union and the Western Bloc were destroyed in mutual nuclear bombings. You are one of the survivors of the nuclear Holocaust. Your mission - to explore the wild and wondrous world of the Soviet Wasteland. To earn your place under the sun. And to investigate a shadowy conspiracy, aimed at destroying all that is left of life on Earth.
What it’s like
Isometric, hand-drawn-feeling pixel art in muted olive, rust and ash-grey, with sepia-tinted wastes under dust-hazed skies and the occasional sickly green glow of a ruined city at dusk. The soundtrack leans on mournful Soviet-flavoured folk, distant accordion and low synth drones, broken up by long stretches of wind and the crunch of boots on gravel. Dialogue arrives in static text boxes, so the screen stays calm while you read. It is a slow, turn-based-feeling RPG where conversations and inventory management matter as much as fights, and the pace suits a long rainy evening or a patient session with a notebook beside you. The tone is wry and melancholy rather than grim for its own sake: a lone survivor drifting through a broken country, bartering, scavenging and gradually uncovering something larger. Violence is present and occasionally sharp, with pixelated gunfights, blood splatter and the odd corpse, but it is abrupt and never lingered over, and there is no sexual content. It is for players who enjoy Fallout-style wastelands, dry humour, Cold War nostalgia and the feel of an old-school CRPG.
