The story

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a story of Badrinath Bansal from Jhansi and Vaidehi Trivedi from Kota and what happens when the two of them meet. Even though they both belong to small towns, their mindset about gender roles in society and about life in general are diametrically opposite. This leads to a clash of ideologies, despite both of them recognising the goodness in each other. Will they be able to overcome circumstances to accept their love for each other? Will they be able to surpass the expectations and pressures of their small town families to be together? Answers to these and many more such questions make for an interesting journey of love, laughter, emotions and madness called Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated daylight and warm sunlit streets give this romantic comedy the glow of a small-town summer, with marigold garlands, vivid silk saris, cramped courtyards and wedding-season decorations filling the frame. The camera stays lively and close, cutting quickly between physical comedy and big, colourful song sequences driven by upbeat Hindi pop, dhol drums and bright brass. Pacing is brisk and playful, with the sharp back-and-forth of two stubborn people who keep colliding and then softening, so the emotional register swings from giggly to tender. Its central arc follows a traditional young man and a headstrong young woman whose opposing views on gender and independence slowly give way to respect. Intensity is mild: some shoving, a few heated confrontations and pursuit played for laughs, no gore, and only kissing and romantic closeness rather than explicit content. It suits a lighthearted weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or a group watch, and is for people who want a bright, funny, warm romance with plenty of music and family-drama charm.
