The story
A remastered version of Arkham Asylum developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 4 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It includes all previously released downloadable content.
What it’s like
Dim, fog-choked gothic corridors lit by sickly green gas and the cold blue glow of Batman's detective overlay, with the rain-slicked stone of Arkham's cells and courtyards rendered in crisp, remastered high definition. The palette runs bruised purple, bile green and deep shadow, punctuated by hard flashes of combat light. Sound is a low, ominous score that swells into percussive strikes during fights, with the Joker's taunts and radio chatter giving the madhouse a constant unnerving hum. Pacing alternates between slow, deliberate stealth through vents and rafters and fast, rhythmic brawling where each counter lands with satisfying weight in the hands. The mood is brooding and tense, a sustained gothic dread leavened by dark wit, and it suits a late evening alone with headphones on. Violence is frequent and stylised: punches, takedowns and gadget-driven fights, with some grim imagery and a menacing, unsettling atmosphere, but no gore played for shock. The arc follows a hero hardened under pressure and a madness that feeds on fear. It is for players who want atmospheric comic-book noir, methodical stealth and brawling, and a moody, claustrophobic night in.
