The story

One part vigilante, one part criminal kingpin, Red Hood begins cleaning up Gotham with the efficiency of Batman, but without following the same ethical code.

What it’s like

Hard-edged 2D animation in deep shadow, with Gotham rendered as rain-slicked rooftops, sodium-orange streetlight and cold blue interiors, and the bat-cave lit by a few harsh practical sources. The camera favours fast, cut-driven action set against stillness in quiet rooms, so the violence arrives in sharp bursts rather than as constant noise. The score is a brooding orchestral pulse with synth undertones that swells during fights and drops to near silence in the talky scenes. The vibe is grim, operatic and restless, with a sense of moral unease running under the costumed spectacle; it suits a late-night watch or a weekend marathon of superhero animation. Pacing is brisk and confrontational, and the emotional register turns on a bruised, angry mentor-and-protégé relationship and a man who has come back wrong. Violence is frequent and fairly brutal, including punches, gunfire, and a few grim deaths and bloody aftermath, with dark themes of abandonment and revenge; it is not gore-heavy but it is not gentle. Made for fans of Batman who want a darker, more adult take on the mythology, and for viewers who like crime stories with a vigilante at their centre.
