The story

Batman learns he has a violent, unruly pre-teen son, secretly raised by the terrorist group known as The League of Assassins.

What it’s like

Clean, angular 2D animation with inked outlines and flat, moody colour: rain-slicked Gotham rooftops in deep blues and greys, sudden flashes of orange and white during fights, and a palette that gets warmer only when a character's guard drops. The camera stays close and kinetic in combat, cutting quickly between blows and shadowed silhouettes, then settles into quieter, longer shots of a stiff, uneasy father and son sharing a room. The score leans on taut strings and low percussion, with stretches of near silence in the tense kitchen and training-hall scenes. Its vibe is brooding but brisk, a comic-book action film with a wary, prickly emotional core. It suits a Friday night with the lights off, or a comfort rewatch for anyone who enjoys the DC animated films. Violence is frequent and stylised: martial-arts brawls, thrown bodies, weapons and some bloodshed, but no gore and no sexual content. The pacing is fast in the set-pieces and patient in between. It is for viewers who want a father-son story told through punches and wary glances, with the emotional beats earned slowly.
