The story

A wealthy playboy named Bruce Wayne and a Chicago cop named Jim Gordon both return to Gotham City where their lives unexpectedly intersect.

What it’s like

Gritty, rain-slicked Gotham rendered in hard-edged hand-drawn animation: inky blacks, sickly sodium-yellow streetlight, and a palette of bruised blues and sewer greens that makes the city feel permanently damp and corrupt. Camera work is cinematic and claustrophobic, with low angles on cramped alleys, tight close-ups in squad rooms, and a sparse, brooding orchestral score that swells only at violence. The mood is bleak, grimy and tense, a cold-night crime thriller with noir fatalism rather than superhero spectacle. Pacing is deliberate and grounded, following two flawed men slowly hardening into their roles, one a fledgling vigilante and the other a cop fighting a corrupt department. Intensity is moderate to strong: frequent fistfights, gunfire, a few bloody injuries and some grim crime-scene imagery, with cruelty and police brutality in the background, though little gore and no sexual content. Best for adult viewers who want a moody, mature origin story and enjoy police procedural grit over bright, playful heroics.
