The story
Stuck in COVID-19 lockdown, US comedian and musician Bo Burnham attempts to stay sane and happy by writing, shooting and performing a one-man comedy special.
What it’s like
Cramped, self-shot frames dominate: a single room lit by the cold blue glow of laptop screens, a ring light's flat white, and the occasional harsh, unflattering spill of a bare bulb, with Bo Burnham usually alone at the center of the composition or boxed in by his own camera rigs and the walls of a bedroom-turned-studio. The camera shifts constantly between tidy, deliberately staged shots and jittery handheld or webcam-style footage, so the look moves between polished production and raw home video, with a grainy, low-fi digital texture throughout. The sound is equally restless: sparse piano and acoustic guitar give way to glossy synth pop, a cappella, and abrupt silences, and the pace swings between sharp sketch bits and long, uncomfortable stretches that sit with an idea until it curdles. The vibe is anxious, wry, and claustrophobic, a sort of isolated, darkly funny unease, best suited to a late night alone or a reflective evening when you want something clever that doesn't pretend everything is fine. Its emotional register moves between jokes and real despair, following one man's slow unraveling and tentative reconnection with the outside world. Intensity is moderate: frequent profanity, sexual humor and references, and heavy talk of depression, panic, and suicidal thoughts, but no graphic violence. For people who want comedy that's honest about mental health and internet fatigue, and who can handle bleakness mixed with laughs.
