The story

Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of late 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined.

What it’s like

Gritty late-1990s New York rendered in sweaty, grime-lit night streets, sodium-orange and neon haze over wet asphalt, with the kinetic handheld energy of a film that wants you close to its battered protagonist. Director Darren Aronofsky brings a restless, stylised hand: sudden snap-zooms, tight corridor framing, bursts of hard-cut montage, and a soundtrack of 90s rock and sharp percussive stings that keep the nerves jangling. The vibe is rough, wry and a little manic, dark comedy with a cold undertow, the kind of late-night watch that feels like a bad week turning into a worse one, with a cat and a baseball bat as recurring hooks. Violence is frequent and sudden, sometimes brutal, with blunt physical menace and some bloody moments; the sexual content is adult and brief, and the tone stays detached rather than warm. Pacing is brisk and escalating, and its central arc follows a burned-out man pulled into chaos, slowly and grudgingly finding his footing among dangerous people. It suits viewers who enjoy caper-flavoured crime with a sardonic edge and do not need comfort, and it is not a gentle or cozy pick.
