The story

The 10th Edition is the first game in the series to feature a working online component and also the first PC version to feature animated chess sets and customizable interface.

What it’s like

Clean, bright 3D chess sets sit under a flat, even studio light, with the camera hovering above a board of crisp squares and pieces that animate with small, deliberate motions when they move or fall. The mood is that of a tidy study or a quiet desk at home: nothing is dramatic, the palette stays neutral and polished, and the interface can be dressed up with themed boards and piece styles that change how the room feels. Sound is light and unobtrusive, mostly the soft click of a move and a calm, looping background track, with near-silence when you are deep in thought. The pace is unhurried and turn-based, with long stretches of quiet calculation punctuated by short bursts of satisfaction when a combination lands. Intensity is nil: no violence, gore, or fear, only the mild tension of a closing endgame. It suits a rainy weekend afternoon, a wind-down before bed, or background play while doing something else with one eye on the board. It is for people who want a patient, low-stakes companion for learning chess, testing themselves against bots, or playing a friendly online game at their own speed.
