The story

Lichess is an Internet chess server. Anyone can play anonymously, although players may register an account on the site to play rated games. All features are available for free, as the site is funded by donations.

What it’s like

Clean, flat, almost monastic interface: white and grey boards, crisp piece sets in several styles, and a dark mode that dims everything to a soft low glow for late sessions. There is no soundtrack to speak of, only the faint click of pieces and the quiet chime of a clock, so the mood comes from silence and the pace of thought. Puzzles arrive one after another in a steady rhythm, each a small self-contained scene on the board to be solved, and a long game unfolds slowly across a reflective, unhurried pulse. The vibe is calm, focused and a little austere, the kind of background hum that suits a quiet evening, a lunch break, or a flight where you want something to hold your attention without asking for anything else. Bullet and blitz modes add a sharper, anxious tick for those who want heat, while correspondence play stretches moves across days for a slower burn. Nothing here is violent, frightening or sexual; the only tension is the honest pressure of a clock and an opponent's next move. It suits strategy lovers, puzzle addicts, and anyone who wants a free, uncluttered place to think in silence, whether they play anonymously or build a rated record over years.
