The story

Decades since their successful television series was canceled, Chip has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale, meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated live-action Los Angeles sits alongside hand-drawn and CGI animation, so the frame keeps shifting between a sun-washed sunny city and a cartoon world that has its own bold, flat colour. Daytime scenes have a glossy, commercial sharpness, with pastel suburbs, convention-hall fluorescents and neon-lit backlots, while the animated sequences lean into exaggerated squash-and-stretch and loud primary palettes. The score is chirpy and brassy, full of jazzy detective-movie stings and bouncy pop cues, and the sound design makes slapstick feel physical. Its vibe is cheerful, self-aware nostalgia, the kind of breezy, playful afternoon that suits a lazy weekend, a family movie night, or a comfort watch when you want something light. Pacing is quick and joke-dense, with a loose, mystery-shaped spine that never gets too dark. The emotional core is two former partners slowly rebuilding a friendship that drifted apart. Intensity is mild: some cartoonish peril, mild action and comic punches, no gore, no sexual content, and no real cruelty. It is for viewers who want warm, witty, gentle fun that still rewards adults who grew up with the originals.
