The story

As Emily struggles to fit in at home and at school, she discovers a small red puppy who is destined to become her best friend. When Clifford magically undergoes one heck of a growth spurt, becomes a gigantic dog and attracts the attention of a genetics company, Emily and her Uncle Casey have to fight the forces of greed as they go on the run across New York City. Along the way, Clifford affects the lives of everyone around him and teaches Emily and her uncle the true meaning of acceptance and unconditional love.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated CGI-live-action hybrid with a storybook sheen: the enormous red dog rendered in glossy, cartoonish fur against real New York streets, brownstone stoops, and sunny city parks, all lit in a warm, even daylight that rarely gets moody. Colors are primary and cheerful, the camera moves with brisk, playful energy through chase sequences and slapstick set-pieces, and the score is bouncy and orchestral with the occasional pop cue. The vibe is sunny and goofy, easygoing and sweet, the sort of thing to put on for a lazy weekend afternoon, a rainy-day kids' movie, or as background while folding laundry. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with the emotional beats kept simple and warm: a lonely girl who feels out of place finds an unconditional friend, and an uncle learns to show up for her. Intensity is low: some peril and corporate villainy, slapstick chaos and mild scares, with no gore and no sexual content. Best for families with young children, or for adults who want something gentle, funny, and uncomplicated.
