The story
One rainy night after a school festival, a group of students from Kisaragi Academy decide to perform the "Sachiko Ever After" charm, which will unite them forever as friends. Once the ritual is done, a sudden earthquake transports them to Heavenly Host, a torn down elementary school. Unbeknownst to Satoshi and his friends, however, is the horrific past behind it which culminated in its demolition. As they look for each other and try to escape from Heavenly Host, they soon find out their lives are at the mercy of those affected by that same bloodied past.
What it’s like
Rain-slick night streets give way to a dim, decaying elementary school, rendered in hand-drawn animation with muted greys and sickly fluorescent greens, where a single splash of arterial red lands with real shock. Cramped hallways, cracked chalkboards and empty classrooms are framed in tight, claustrophobic shots that linger on doorways and shadowed corners, and the soundtrack leans on sparse, unsettling tones and long stretches of ambient dripping and distant footsteps. The mood is oppressive and anxious, a slow-burn dread of "what's behind that door" that breaks into sudden, grisly violence. Pacing is brisk within each episode and punctuated by panicked, desperate exchanges between frightened teenagers who are slowly turning on one another, so the emotional register is bleak, tragic and relentless rather than cathartic. Intensity is high: frequent graphic gore, bloody dismemberment, brutal deaths, child-centred cruelty and a constant threat of violence, with little relief. This is not gentle viewing and offers no comfort or softening. It suits those who want unflinching, atmospheric horror on a dark night, fans of survival-horror stories built around grim school settings, and viewers who can stomach extreme, explicit bloodshed in exchange for an eerie, pressured mood.
