The story
A collection of animated horror stories based on the works of Japanese artist Junji Ito.
What it’s like
Hand-drawn anime in flat, washed-out pastels that curdle into sickly greens, bruised purples and deep black, with the grotesque spirals of Ito's linework bleeding into otherwise ordinary suburban rooms, school corridors and seaside towns. Each episode is a self-contained chapter, so the mood resets often: quiet, sun-bleached daytime stillness gives way to long, unbroken shots of something wrong settling into place, with sparse, eerie strings and silences that make a slammed door or a wet sound land hard. The tone is bleak and fatalistic, more tragedy than jump-scare, and the people caught in these stories tend to be ordinary teenagers and families drifting toward an inevitable horror they can't escape. The intensity is high: frequent graphic gore, body horror, mutilation and disturbing imagery, with dread and cruelty carrying much of the weight. It suits a late night alone with the lights off, not a comfort rewatch or background noise. It is for viewers who want unsettling, grotesque atmosphere and short, bleak stories, and who can handle sustained body horror.
