The story

Counter-Strike: Source is a team-based tactical first-person shooter and a remake of the original Counter-Strike built on Valve's Source engine. A team of Counter-Terrorists faces a team of Terrorists across a series of rounds, each won by completing an objective such as defusing a bomb or rescuing hostages, or by eliminating the opposing team. Eliminated players do not respawn until the next round, and moving while firing reduces accuracy, encouraging careful positioning. The Source engine added interactive physics objects, ragdoll effects, and higher-detail environments, and the game was later succeeded by Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

What it’s like

Hard-edged urban and industrial maps lit by flat daylight and sodium-orange interiors, with sand-coloured desert compounds and grey concrete warehouses that repeat across rounds until they become familiar as a room in your own house. The camera is tight first-person, held low and close, so the view bobs with footsteps and jolts with recoil, and the rounds are short bursts of silence broken by gunfire that rings hard off concrete, the clatter of spent casings, the hollow thump of a planted bomb ticking down, and the flat pop of a sniper rifle across an empty yard. Source's physics add small, tactile details: crates skid, bodies go limp and tumble down stairs, and smoke grenades bloom into grey clouds that hang in the air. Moments of tension are long and held, with players crouched behind a doorway for ten seconds before anyone moves, then everything collapses into a fast, loud exchange lasting a few seconds. The vibe is tense, communal and focused, a sweaty late-night session with friends or a stranger's voice chat. Violence is frequent and bloody, with blood spray, headshot kills and deaths that are immediate but not graphic in a gore-heavy way; there is no sexual content, and the intensity is constant stress rather than lingering horror. It suits players who want skill-based team play, tactical patience and repeated short rounds, not a story or a gentle experience.
