The story

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a third-person action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by otherworldly creatures. Players control Sam Porter Bridges, a retired porter, as he traverses the open worlds of Mexico and Australia to connect isolated survivors to a wireless communication network called the Chiral Network. The core gameplay revolves around delivering packages across hazardous terrain, managing cargo weight, building infrastructure like roads and monorails, and navigating natural disasters. Combat has a greater focus than its predecessor, offering lethal and non-lethal options alongside stealth approaches. The game features asynchronous online elements where players can build structures visible to others.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached desert roads and humid, rain-drenched coastline, shot in a heavy, painterly style with long lingering vistas and storm clouds that roll in without warning. Sound does much of the work: long stretches of ambient drone, wind and rain on the cargo, and the slow hum of a motorbike on empty road, with a sparse, melancholy score rising only at moments of tension. The vibe is lonely, contemplative and quietly eerie, a slow journey through a world that feels both empty and watched. Pacing is deliberate and meditative, built around the rhythm of walking, balancing loads and building roads, then breaking into short, sharp spikes of danger when ghostly creatures appear. Emotional tone is wistful and earnest, following a weary courier slowly reconnecting with others. Intensity is moderate and uneven: combat can be lethal or non-lethal, with brief, sometimes brutal violence, grim bodies and creature horror that leans on dread more than gore, and there is no sexual content. It suits late evenings alone, a long weekend with headphones, or anyone who finds the act of traversing a landscape more absorbing than the destination, and it rewards players who enjoy patient, atmospheric open-world wandering.
