The story
Estranged, a Half-Life 2 mod, is a the story of a lone fisherman, stranded on a mysterious island during a violent storm. Explore rich environments and meet the curious inhabitants of the island as you find a way back to the mainland…
What it’s like
Rain-lashed coastline and dim, moody interiors rendered in the Source engine's slightly dated, painterly lighting, with grey-green storm skies, weathered wood and rusted metal, and the wet glint of a shoreline under lightning. Sound does much of the work: thunder rolling over the sea, creaking structures, distant wind, and sparse, ambient tension rather than a driving soundtrack. Movement is deliberate and first-person, with long stretches of wandering through overgrown paths, abandoned buildings and crumbling ruins, punctuated by puzzles and occasional encounters with strange islanders. Violence and gore are present but limited, mostly brief, with dread and eerie unease carrying more of the weight than action. The mood is isolated and wistful, a stormy-day mystery with a lonely, slightly uncanny edge. It suits a rainy afternoon alone with headphones, or anyone who enjoys atmospheric exploration with a light touch of horror and a sense of being a stranger somewhere unfamiliar. Fans of Half-Life-style environmental storytelling and indie mod craft will find much to sit with here.
