The story

What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of short stories about a cursed family in Washington State. Each story offers a chance to experience the life of a different family member with stories ranging from the early 1900s to the present day. The gameplay and tone of the stories are as varied as the family members themselves. The only constants are that each is played from a first-person perspective and that each story ends with that family member's death. It's a game about what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us. You'll follow Edith Finch as she explores the history of her family and tries to figure out why she's the last Finch left alive.

What it’s like

Muted Pacific Northwest greens and grey coastal light give way to a sprawling, storybook house on a rocky island, where each room opens onto a different style: hand-inked comic panels, sepia photographs, a dreamy stylized fantasy, and sudden stretches of rough, almost cartoonish gameplay. Camera-flash snapshots, steam curling off bathwater, and deep blue water carry much of the mood, with a sparse, wistful score that drops into near silence at the moments that matter. The vibe is melancholy and wondering, equal parts eerie and tender, suited to a slow evening alone or a rainy afternoon with headphones on. Each vignette follows a family member toward an abrupt, often violent or gruesome death, with bloody, startling moments and some murder, but the dread feels more sorrowful than gory. The pacing is brisk and episodic, and the emotional arc is a quiet reckoning with grief and the family's curse, with a gentle, humbled note at the end. For players who want a literary, atmospheric story that moves between tones, but who should know that the deaths are real and not gentle.
