The story

Accompanied by her closeted gay buddy, a promiscuous teenager sets out to find her long-absent father.

What it’s like

Bright, sun-washed suburban color with a loose, bouncy camera that favors close two-shots and quick cuts between schoolyard, diner and car interiors, the whole thing tinted with the candy-bright palette of a mid-1980s small town. The score leans on upbeat pop and nostalgic needle drops that keep the mood buoyant even when the scenes turn raw. Its vibe is brash, warm and bittersweet, a road-trip comedy that is loud and crude one minute and tender the next. It suits a lively weekend watch or a comfort rewatch with friends rather than quiet late-night viewing. Sexual content and crude teen humor are frequent, with explicit talk and situations, plus profanity, bullying and some emotional family conflict; there is no gore, and violence is minimal. The arc follows a headstrong teen and her gay best friend slowly learning to see each other and the adults in their lives more honestly. It is for viewers who enjoy irreverent coming-of-age comedy with a soft emotional core, and who are comfortable with frank sexual humor.
