The story
A high school senior drives cross-country with his best friends to hook up with a babe he met online.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated daylight and sun-faded highway vistas make up most of this comedy, with the camera staying loose and handheld in the cramped car and snapping to wide, flat shots of gas stations, motel parking lots and small-town diners. The palette runs warm and cheap: sunburn orange, fast-food primary colors, fluorescent motel rooms that look a little sickly. Sound is pop-rock and blunt needle drops over the driving stretches, with lots of crosstalk between the characters in the car, so it feels like sitting in on a noisy, slightly embarrassing road trip. The vibe is goofy, raunchy and good-natured, the kind of easy background watch for a lazy weekend afternoon, a long drive, or a group night in. The pace is brisk and episodic, with gags landing every few minutes. Its emotional center is a teenage boy who learns that friendship and loyalty count for more than the thing he set out to get, and the bond between the three friends carries most of the warmth. Intensity is high on sexual humor and crude language, with frequent nudity, explicit jokes and suggestive situations, but violence is minor and slapstick, and it is not frightening or cruel. Made for people who want a crude, funny coming-of-age road comedy with a big heart under the mess.
