The story

ESOTERIC EBB is a single-player CRPG inspired by the freedom of tabletop adventures. Unravel a political conspiracy with your goblin sidekick. Roll dice in tense encounters. Become a cleric of legends or completely ruin the campaign.

What it’s like

Warm, painterly fantasy scenes with a tabletop-storybook sheen: hand-drawn tavern interiors and sunlit village squares rendered in soft ochres, mossy greens and dusty blues, the camera parked on framed illustrations that feel like pages of an illuminated campaign journal. The mood is playful and conspiratorial, a comfortable sort of mischief, with a voiced narrator who sounds like a game master leaning over the table and a soundtrack of light folk strings and muted percussion that drops away for the tense dice rolls. Turn-based encounters move at an unhurried pace, with long stretches of talk, scheming and exploration broken by sudden clatter and chance. Its arcs follow a cynical sidekick and a player-shaped cleric, with the emotional register shifting between sly comedy and quiet unease as a political plot tightens. Violence is cartoonish and fights are brief; there is no gore and little sexual content, though the stakes of a conspiracy give it a mild, fairy-tale threat. Suited to a slow weekend evening, a long-haul flight, or anyone who wants a tabletop RPG's freedom to make a mess of things, with comedy, mystery and room to improvise.
