The story

Prepare for the Future with Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition, experience the most acclaimed game of 2008 like never before. Create a character of your choosing and descend into an awe-inspiring, post-apocalyptic world where every minute is a fight for survival.

What it’s like

Washed-out greens and rusted browns under a perpetually overcast sky, with the wasteland stretching flat and empty toward a jagged horizon of ruined skyscrapers. The Capital Wasteland's landscape reads as dusty, sun-bleached and lonely, broken up by the cheerful hum of 1950s radio and the sudden crack of gunfire in the distance. Its feel is melancholy and unnervingly quiet between encounters, then tense and abrupt when fights break out, with the first-person view and a Pip-Boy menu that makes every rummage through scrap and every stimpak feel deliberate. Pacing is open and unhurried: long walks across the map, side wandering into collapsed subway tunnels, vault interiors and sleepy settlements, with the main story arriving in chunks rather than pressing forward. Violence is frequent and cartoonishly bloody, with dismemberment, V.A.T.S. slow-motion kills and radiation-soaked creatures; the tone stays darkly comic rather than grim, and sexual content is minimal. Dread appears in dark corridors and radiation zones more than in gore. It suits a long solo session on a weekend, or a patient explorer who wants a hostile, moody world to get lost in, a sandbox for building a character from scratch and seeing where their choices lead.
