The story

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake project, which retells the story of the genre-redefining RPG across three distinct games. Iconic heroes Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith and Red XIII have escaped from the dystopian city Midgar and are now in pursuit of Sephiroth, the vengeful swordsman from Cloud’s past who was thought to be dead.

What it’s like

Lush, painterly open landscapes of grassland, forest and desert under big warm skies, then the sudden neon clutter of a carnival fairground at night, with its saturated pinks, blues and sparkling lights. The camera hangs close over characters during long conversations and swoops wide over the terrain, and the orchestral score swells through reworked versions of familiar melodies, with quieter piano passages in the sadder stretches. Combat is fast, flashy and stylised, with sword flourishes and magic bursts that fill the screen but stay cartoonish rather than gory; violence is frequent and mostly bloodless, and the story leans on grief, betrayal and identity without graphic cruelty. Its vibe is nostalgic and bittersweet, with bursts of playful, goofy energy between heavier moments. The pacing is long and unhurried, built for evenings of wandering, side quests and banter as much as for the main fights. It suits players who want an immersive, sprawling adventure with big emotions, a rich soundtrack and a warm, familiar cast to spend many hours with.
