The story
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood is the second expansion pack to Final Fantasy XIV Online. The expansion takes the Warrior of Light heading to the Gyr Abania region in eastern Aldenard and beyond to the continent of Othard, liberating both the city-states of Ala Mhigo and Doma from the Garlean Empire.
What it’s like
Wide, sunlit vistas do most of the work here: sweeping highland valleys, dusty plains under a hard sky, and the rice terraces and wooden rooflines of a sea-washed city-state, all rendered in a rich, painterly palette with bright daylight and warm dusk. Camera movement is smooth and cinematic in cutscenes, while exploration feels unhurried and open, with the sound of wind through grass and distant crowds. The score swells with full orchestra and shifts to taiko-style percussion and plucked strings in the eastern regions, giving each place its own music. Its vibe is epic but companionable: hopeful, a little melancholy, with the rhythm of a long adventure you can dip into in short sessions or play for hours with friends. Violence is stylised, with sword and magic battles full of flashy effects and no gore, though war and occupation sit in the background and some scenes carry real grief. The story arcs are about rebellion, loyalty, and communities reclaiming their homes, told through large casts and banter. It suits players who want a sprawling, social fantasy world to live in, with steady progression, group dungeons, and the satisfaction of a long-running saga.
