The story

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers is the third expansion pack to Final Fantasy XIV Online. The expansion takes the Warrior of Light to the First, one of thirteen reflections of the Source that is being consumed by a Flood of Light. The main region visited is known as Norvrandt, which is roughly analogous to the Source's Eorzea, and is the only region in the world that has not yet succumbed to the Flood of Light.

What it’s like

Washed-out light and sunlit green, with the Flood of Light spreading as a bleached white haze over familiar landscapes. Norvrandt's regions range from misty lakeland and sun-scorched desert to the storybook brightness of Il Mheg, and the fantasy architecture is detailed and painterly. The orchestral score swells in big, emotional arrangements during set-piece battles and drops to quiet piano and strings in town squares and between quests. Combat is stylized and colorful, with flashy spells and cinematic cutaways rather than gore. Violence is frequent but bloodless, and the darker material is grief, sacrifice, and characters confronting the loss of their homes and people. The pacing is long and conversational, with cutscenes, lore-heavy dialogue, and slow, ambling exploration between big moments. It suits long evening sessions, weekend marathons, or playing alongside friends in co-op dungeons. It is for players who enjoy a sprawling fantasy world, dramatic character arcs, and an MMO that rewards patience with emotional payoff.
