The story

The horror and crime thriller genres collide in this new original series from Robert Rodriguez, based on his cult grindhouse classic about bank-robbing brothers on the run, a lawman bent on bringing them to justice, the devout family caught in the cross-fire, and an ancient evil eager to feast on them all.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached Texas roads, dust hanging in heat haze, and then the sudden lurid turn: neon signs, a strip-club glow and blood that reads bright red against bare wood and tile. The series leans into grindhouse texture, with saturated colour, fast zooms, punchy cutting and a score of driving guitar and synth pulses that give way to eerie stillness whenever the vampires surface. It is loud, sweaty and deliberately trashy in its tone, a genre mash of outlaw Westerns, crime caper and horror that rarely lets the pace settle. Its emotional register is wry and gleeful rather than tender: brothers bicker, a lawman grinds on with stubborn resolve, and a devout family is pulled into chaos they never asked for, but the characters' arcs are mostly about survival and loyalty under pressure. Violence is frequent, bloody and graphic, with gore, stabbings and creature attacks, and there is sexual content and crude humour throughout. This suits late-night binge viewing with friends, or anyone craving high-energy pulp with a neon-soaked, schlocky sense of fun. It is not for viewers seeking gentle, low-stakes comfort.
