The story
When Tara Singh goes missing during a skirmish and is believed to be captured in Pakistan, his son Jeete sets out to rescue him and enters a labyrinth from which they both must escape at all costs.
What it’s like
Sun-bleached and loud, with wide dusty landscapes of Punjab villages and border roads under hard daylight, interrupted by bursts of saturated colour in song sequences and crowd scenes. Camera work is big and kinetic: sweeping crane shots, dramatic zooms, slow-motion punches and the occasional heroic low-angle hold. The score is bombastic, built on dhol drums, brass and swelling orchestral strings, and the soundtrack's patriotic anthems come back again and again. The vibe is earnest, melodramatic and crowd-pleasing, with broad comic beats between the set pieces and an emotional register that tips readily into tears. Pacing is long and unhurried by Western standards, with action arriving in large, repeated waves. The central relationship is a father and son who are separated and then fight their way back toward each other. Violence is frequent and stylised: heavy hand-to-hand brawls, gunfire and a lot of punching, with some blood but no gore, and wartime peril throughout. There is no sexual content. It suits a Saturday evening with a group, or anyone who wants a loud, sentimental, big-hearted action epic and doesn't mind a long runtime.
