The story
The game takes place 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. Set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. The area is outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers.
What it’s like
Wide, windswept vistas of tawny grassland giving way to snowfields under pale, overcast skies, with the snow-capped peak of Mount Yōtei looming over everything. Long rides on horseback through open country pair with slow, watchful stalking through tall grass and frost-bitten woods, while the score swells with taiko and strings during fights and drops to wind, birdcall and creaking boots in between. Combat is brutal and close: blade clashes, arrows loosed from the saddle, and frequent blood spraying across the snow, with the violence shown plainly rather than lingered on for shock. The pace alternates between unhurried exploration and sharp bursts of action, and the emotional register is grim and solemn, a revenge-driven story of a lone fighter hardened by loss who slowly reckons with what the path has cost. It suits a long, absorbing evening with the sound up, not gentle viewing. For players who want a sweeping, atmospheric samurai epic with strong combat and a cold, wintry beauty.
