The story
A cash-strapped young couple inherits a grand country house, only to find it is both falling apart and teeming with the ghosts of former inhabitants.
What it’s like
Warm, bright, and cosy in the way a rainy afternoon indoors can be: the BBC sitcom's look is stagey and daylit, with flat, even light pouring through big sash windows onto faded wallpaper, dust-caked mouldings and a crumbling country-house interior that feels lived-in rather than gothic. The camera stays mostly in tidy, reasonably static two-shots and medium frames, letting the performers' timing carry the scenes, and the ghosts are often placed at the edges of the frame, drifting through doorways or sitting in armchairs as if they were simply another part of the furniture. Sound is light and unobtrusive, with a bright incidental theme and studio-audience laughter that makes it easy to watch while folding laundry or cooking. The pacing is brisk, with short episodes that move from one farcical misunderstanding to the next, and the emotional register stays amused and affectionate, following a young couple learning to live with an unruly household of the dead and slowly building a family of their own. Violence is absent and any fright is mild and played for laughs, with a few broad, cartoonish moments of spookiness. It suits a comfort rewatch, a lazy weekend, or anyone wanting gentle, funny company with a supernatural twist.
