The story
God of War Collection is a compilation of action-adventure games from Sony’s God of War series. It includes God of War and God of War II, originally released for the PlayStation 2. The collection presents the games with improved resolution and performance compared to their original versions. Players follow the story of Kratos as he battles mythological creatures and gods in a narrative inspired by Greek mythology.
What it’s like
Blood-red and bronze-gold against washed-out marble, with the camera hung low behind Kratos's shoulder for sweeping, cinematic set pieces: colossal stone titans, temples bleeding light, and the grey-blue haze of the Underworld. The sound is a thundering orchestral score swelling into choral dread, punctuated by clanging chains, roaring beasts and the heavy crunch of combat. Pacing is relentless and muscular, with combat rhythms broken by puzzle-platforming and vast showpiece encounters, and the emotional register is brutal and operatic, a rage-filled, self-destructive man chasing vengeance against the gods who wronged him. Violence is constant and graphic: close-up blood sprays, dismemberment, gory finishers and some sexual nudity and menace, all of it stylised rather than realistic. Best suited to a loud, late-evening session or a weekend of spectacle for players who want mythic scale, ferocious combat and a protagonist who is anything but gentle.
