The story

Grand Theft Auto Online is an online multiplayer action-adventure game, and is a standalone version of Grand Theft Auto V. Set within the fictional state of San Andreas (based on Southern California), Grand Theft Auto Online allows up to 30 players to explore its open world environment and engage in cooperative or competitive game matches. The game features a range of technical and graphical improvements across the entire experience including performance enhancements for select vehicles in GTA Online, and so much more.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached Los Angeles sprawl rendered in glossy, saturated daylight, with palm-lined boulevards, hazy smog-orange sunsets, and neon-lit nightlife bleeding across wet asphalt after dark. The camera mostly sits behind your vehicle or character, with a fast, wide-angle feel on highways and a sweeping, cinematic sweep over the hills and coastline of San Andreas. The soundtrack spills from in-car radio stations, a jukebox of classic and modern rock, hip hop, and electronic tracks, while engine roar, sirens, and distant helicopter thrum fill the gaps. The vibe is loose, chaotic, and playfully irreverent, a shared sandbox where the mood swings from lazy cruising to sudden mayhem. It suits a weekend with friends on voice chat, a long evening of wandering a city with no real objective, or a casual solo session with something playing in the background. Pacing is free-form: players drift between jobs, heists, races, and side activities, and the social rhythm of crews and rivals gives the world its energy. Violence is frequent and cartoonishly exaggerated, with gunfights, car chases, and explosions, and crude, profane humour throughout; there is no realistic gore but the content is comedic, mature, and not gentle. Built for players who want an open-ended social playground with plenty of bad behaviour and ridiculous set pieces.
