What it’s like

Sun-bleached and restless, with the palette of a Southern California summer: hazy golden hour over palm-lined boulevards, the chrome and dust of Blaine County's desert, and a deep blue ocean glare at Vespucci Beach. The game's day-night cycle shifts the city from washed-out noon to neon-smeared nights, and its radio stations, from funk to hip-hop to country to talk, do much of the atmospheric work as you drive. Its open world rewards aimless wandering: slow cruises down the coast highway, low planes skimming ridgelines, a sudden rainstorm rolling across the hills. The vibe is cynical, funny and loose, a crime-caper bromance with a satirical edge, and it suits a long solo session, a lazy weekend or a late-night drive with the radio on. Its three protagonists, a retired bank robber, a repo man hungry for something better and an unhinged ex-soldier, move through the story in a restless, escalating rhythm, with bursts of frantic heists and long stretches of quiet dialogue. Violence is frequent and often cartoonishly graphic, with gunfights, car crashes and brutal takedowns; sexual references and drug use appear in the writing and jokes, and cruelty is part of the satire. It is not gentle. It suits adults who enjoy dark comedy, sprawling sandboxes and the pleasure of driving aimlessly through a convincingly lived-in city.
