The story

A machine gun game in which the player boards a chopper flying over New York City to take out terrorists. It was released in arcades in 1995 and was published by SEGA. On July 25 2005, a Terrorist attack was unleashed in New York's Times Square by a faction called BEAR EX (Android Invaders) who aim to overthrow the government. The Special Air Assault Force (The S.A.A.F.) were called in to take care of the job.

What it’s like

Hard-edged arcade spectacle in a flat, saturated, early-polygon style: a pale blue-grey sky over a wireframe-thin Manhattan, scorching orange fireballs, and a flurry of spark and smoke particles bursting off helicopter gunships and rooftops. The camera rides locked to the chopper as it swoops between skyscrapers, so the motion is fast, forward-rushing and mechanical rather than handheld or intimate. Sound is loud and brassy: pounding synth-rock and rotor thump, clattering machine-gun fire, and bursts of explosions that punch through the mix. The mood is loud, buoyant and unserious about its premise, a sugar-rush of destruction that never lingers on its people or its scenes. Violence is constant and cartoonishly bloodless, with enemies simply popping into debris and fireballs; there is no gore and no real cruelty, though the terrorist-attack framing gives the shootouts a stern tone. It suits short, high-energy sessions, a nostalgic arcade hit, or a loud background game for players who want relentless action with a retro, glossy look. It is for players who enjoy twitchy shooting, vehicle set pieces and the chunky charm of 1990s arcade graphics.
