The story
A fresh look at Hartley High over 20 years on. With her new friends - outsiders Quinni and Darren - Amerie must repair her reputation, while navigating love, sex, and heartbreak.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated Sydney daylight, sun-hot school corridors, and a glossy, pop-driven soundtrack that keeps the energy up, with quick cuts and a handheld restlessness that suits a group of teenagers who never sit still. The palette runs to lime, pink and sky blue, and the humour is sharp and irreverent, with lots of direct-to-camera asides and comic timing. The tone is comedic and warm but gets real about racism, bullying and queer and trans identity, and the arcs follow young people working out who they are and whom they can trust. Frank talk about sex, relationships and heartbreak runs throughout, with some sexual content and some bullying, though no gore and little real violence. It fits a comfort rewatch that still has something to say, and suits viewers who want a lively, funny teen drama with a politically aware streak and a feel-good, outsider-friendly heart.
