The story
J. B. Hammock played by his own rules, and rule number one was never settle down. He treated his women well, but with a no-strings detachment they all accepted. But sweet Tellie Maddox hovered about like a gossamer butterfly, always trying to take care of him, always caring about him. It was enough to make a confirmed bachelor take drastic measures. Then Tellie lost part of her memory. She believed she was J.B.'s faithful sidekick. Even he couldn't be so heartless as to push Tellie aside, and so he played the role of friend until friendship turned to something else, something so much deeper than a heartbreaker like J.B. ever intended. He was hooked. Then Tellie's memory returned.
What it’s like
Warm, dusty ranch country in the American West, rendered in plain, unhurried prose that lingers on sunbaked pastures, open skies, and the small domestic rhythms of a working homestead: coffee on a porch, horses at a fence line, a truck idling in the heat. The voice is brisk and wry, with light banter and a steady undercurrent of sweetness, and the feel is classic category romance, cozy and bright with a touch of old-fashioned sparkle. It suits a lazy afternoon, a weekend read on the couch, or a comfort pick for a rainy evening with a mug of tea. The pace is conversational and the chapters move easily, with the emotional arc running from a wary, self-assured cowboy to a man slowly and reluctantly turned soft by a devoted woman. Intimacy is present but not explicit, and the tension is more emotional than physical, with a bittersweet memory-loss thread that stays gentle rather than harrowing. Violence is minimal and mild, with no gore and little peril. It is for readers who want a warm, low-stakes romance with cowboy charm and a satisfying happy ending.
