The story

Hedgewars is a turn based strategy, artillery, action and comedy game, featuring the antics of pink hedgehogs with attitude as they battle from the depths of hell to the depths of space. As commander, it's your job to assemble your crack team of hedgehog soldiers and bring the war to your enemy.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish 2D side-on battlefields built from hand-drawn-style terrain, with chunky sprites of pink hedgehogs in helmets and bandanas bouncing across dirt, sand, and ruined stone. The palette leans saturated: sky blues, sunset oranges, and grassy greens, with explosions that burst in bold, blocky colour and crater the landscape in ways that feel tactile and physical. Sound is playful and bouncy, with cheerful chiptune-leaning tracks, squeaky hedgehog voice barks, and the satisfying thud of a well-aimed grenade. Turns are deliberate and unhurried: you plan a shot, watch the arc of a bazooka or the swing of a rope, then wait for the wind-affected trajectory to settle before the next move. The vibe is goofy, irreverent, and warm, a light-hearted slapstick war that suits a relaxed evening, a bit of mental stretching during a lunch break, or a multiplayer match with friends who like arguing about angles. The intensity is cartoon violence: frequent explosions and hedgehog deaths, but no gore, blood, or real cruelty, and the tone stays comic throughout. It's for people who enjoy tactical planning and physics-based artillery, who like open-source games, and who want strategy with a sense of humour.
