The story

Worms 2: Armageddon is a 2D artillery turn-based tactics video game developed by Team17 and part of the Worms series, released on July 1, 2009 on Xbox Live Arcade. The game is a follow up to the 2007 Worms game, which in-turn was a port of 2006's Worms: Open Warfare.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish 2D landscapes in saturated primary colours: grassy hills, scorched craters, snowy mountains and retro-futurist bases, all drawn with chunky hand-painted sprites that wobble and squash with comic exaggeration. Explosions burst in fat, bouncy puffs of smoke and debris, and every tiny worm has a cheeky voice that yelps, taunts and sings in a rapid-fire mock-military accent. The soundtrack is light and jaunty, with lively brass and whistle-tinged loops that drop away into the quiet plink of a wind gauge between turns. Turn-based pacing gives it a loose, stop-start rhythm: you lob a bazooka, watch the arc, then sit back while the landscape crumbles. Its vibe is silly, chaotic and slapstick, the kind of warm-hearted mayhem that suits a lazy weekend, a friendly couch match, or a quick game between chores. Violence is cartoon-level and bloodless: worms explode, fall and drown with exaggerated gags, and there's no gore or real cruelty, though frantic moments of sudden defeat can sting. Best for players who want light, funny strategy with friends or a relaxed solo challenge, and who enjoy the sheer joy of watching something ridiculous go badly wrong.
