The story
Detective Charlie Hudson teams up with what he calls his "highly trained law enforcement animal" German Shepherd dog named Rex who he prefers to team up with because he doesn't talk his ear off.
What it’s like
Warm, bright, unhurried crime drama with a bit of comic lift. Shot in and around St. John's, Newfoundland, it leans on daylight and coastal weather: grey Atlantic skies that break into clear blue, harbour water and colourful clapboard houses, rain-slicked streets and wind through the trees. Framing is clean and conventional, with plenty of medium shots and easy coverage of the lead and his German Shepherd partner, and the camera stays patient with them during quiet moments. The score is light and melodic, and the sound of city ambience and barking dogs keeps the mood friendly rather than tense. Vibe: cosy, good-natured, mildly funny. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a family evening, or a gentle background watch while doing chores. Pacing is episodic and steady, with each case wrapped up cleanly. Its emotional register is comforting; the central arc is a solitary detective slowly opening up to his team and to the people around him. Violence is present but mild, mostly off-screen or brief, with no gore and little sexual content. It is well suited to viewers who want a gentle crime show with an animal at its heart, and to families or anyone who wants mystery without dread.
